Dev Log #1 Game Jam to Steam Marketplace!

From Game Jam entry to published title! Here we go!

We came together to participate in the Themed Horror Jam #14 on itch.io with the goal of learning to work in a game engine (this time, Unity) and to find out how well we worked together as a team. Long story short, our supernatural themed visual novel/bartending simulator game won first place in the Themed Horror Game Jam! While we’re proud of what we did in that timeframe, we had so much more we wanted to put in the game that we decided to keep it going and make our ideal version.

Together, we are Unlucky Planet Games, and our production on “So this Vampire walks into a Bar…” is currently in development!

Join our broke protagonist Jackie, as they desperately try to make ends meet by working in a creepy bar, despite having no experience at all! What kind of strange customers will come in? How will the drinks you make affect the outcome of the game?

We created the game jam version using Unity and a plugin called Fungus, a visual scripting tool for visual novels. We played around with the features of Fungus and were able to create an interactive mixology mini-game that we felt was pretty robust for the scale we were going for.  For the full version we are going to continue to use Fungus and see how far we can push the mixology portions of the game since it so seamlessly connects with narrative if we do it this way.  It gives us a lot of options for decisions you make as a bartender to affect the outcome of the story, without us having to create any custom tools or scripts (so far); giving us more time to focus on writing, art and story.  In our dev logs, we plan on discussing aspects of our design process, problem solving, and other insights into how/why we’re making this game and what the future may hold for us, so keep checking in!

Cheers!
